The Dua of Hazrat Moosa (Alaihis Salaam) teaches us a great lesson about how beloved Rasoolullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) is to Almighty Allah and it also teaches us that we cannot fathom the reality of Rasoolullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam). Leave alone a verse of the Holy Qur’an no one will even be able to bring forth a Da’eef Hadith where Rasoolullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) made such a Dua to be blessed with the Vision of Almighty Allah. Yet our Beloved Aaqa (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) was invited from the Court of Almighty Allah, that he may present himself there. And he was blessed with such closeness that none has ever been or will ever be blessed with. On one hand there is a Dua (in the sense of a request) and on the other hand there is one who is being invited without asking.
Hazrat Moosa (Alaihis Salaam) made Dua to Almighty Allah saying, “Rabbi Arini Anzur Ilaik.” [Surah 7, Verse 143] In other words, “O my Creator, Bless me with Your Divine Vision. I wish to see you.” This was the Dua of a Nabi and the Dua of a Nabi is never rejected. But this Divine Vision can only be attained when one is beyond place and to reach there (where there is no there) is unique to Rasoolullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam). So the question arises how then was the answer to this request given?
Almighty Allah replied to this request saying, “Lan Tharaani” [Surah 7, Verse 143]. Allah Ta’ala told him that whilst remaining on earth he will not be able to attain the Divine Vision, but he was commanded to look towards Mount Toor. [Surah 7, Verse 143] In other words if Mount Toor is able to bear the one Ray of His manifestation, then he shall be able to have Allah Ta’ala’s Divine Vision.
The Holy Qur’an says, “Then when his Lord made His light shine on the mountain, He broke it into pieces; and Moosa fell down unconscious.” [Surah 7, Verse 143] When Almighty Allah manifested His Divine Ray on the Mount Toor, the mountain turned to dust and by this one moment of seeing just one Divine Ray, Hazrat Moosa (Alaihis Salaam) became unconscious (not like ordinary people).
Now let us look at the effect this manifestation had on Hazrat Moosa (Alaihis Salaam). The power of his sight became so intense that no one could look at him directly and if anyone looked at him directly, they lost their eyesight, just as the entire Mount Toor turned to dust when the manifestation fell upon it. Now the manifestation of a manifestation fell upon the eyes of Hazrat Moosa (Alaihis Salaam) and none could look into his eyes. It is for this reason that Hazrat Moosa (Alaihis Salaam) always either wore a veil over his face or walked with his eyes lowered. His wife, Hazrat Safura (Radiallahu Ta’ala Anha), once desired to look into his eyes. She asked to see those eyes which he always hid from her. Hazrat Moosa (Alaihis Salaam) said to her that she would not be able to look at him as she would lose her eyesight if she did. He said, “This is because the manifestation of my Rabb is within my eyes.” It is not within the capacity of everyone to bear looking at it. She said, “I too wish to experience the delight of that manifestation of my Creator. I also want a share in attaining some radiance from that blessed manifestation. I will only see with one eye.” Thus she looked into his eyes with just one eye and she kept the other eye covered. The moment she placed her sight on the eyes of Hazrat Moosa (Alaihis Salaam), immediately that eye of hers became blind, but she received such spiritual delight that she became restless to attain even more of this blessed vision. In this restlessness to attain more delight in seeing this manifestation, she opened her other eye and that too went blind, but through the grace of Almighty Allah she attained her sight in the other eye again. She then opened this eye again and blocked the eye that had lost its vision and then that eye went blind and the other eye gained vision again. Hazrat Safura (Radiallahu Ta’ala Anha) used to see with one eye and the other eye would go blind, then she would close that one and see with the other, which would regain its power of sight. This continued until such time that both the eyes were blessed with the ability to see.
Hazrat Moosa (Alaihis Salaam) only saw the manifestation of a manifestation and his eyes were blessed with such power that he could see an ant in the darkness of the night from miles away, so what then can be said about the excellence of the direct Divine Vision that was blessed to our Beloved Rasool (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam)? What then can be said about his vision?
It is for this reason that the Sahaabah noticed that Rasoolullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) used to observe whether a person was in punishment or receiving any reward whilst in his grave. Rasoolullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) had knowledge of things that happened in the darkness of the night. Whilst living in Madina he was giving information regarding the condition of those living in Makkah and whilst living in Madina he was informing the people of the condition of those in Rome. Not only did Rasoolullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) inform us about the condition of people in his era, but he has given information regarding those who would come centuries afterwards. He gave information regarding everything until Qiyaamah and regarding the Day of Qiyaamah itself. He gave information regarding Jannat, who will enter Jannat and in what condition he will enter Jannat and he gave information regarding those who will enter Jahannam and in what condition they will enter Jahannam. Our Beloved Master (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) informed us of all this and it is all within his sight. It is for this reason that Rasoolullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said, “For as long as the universe is in existence, all that is before my sight, and I am seeing everything like I am seeing the palm of my hand.” [Sharah Mawahibul Laduniya]
So what does this mean? It means that Allah Ta’ala has blessed the sight of our Beloved Master Muhammad Mustafa (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) with the power of His Manifestation and the power of His Manifestation is that Rasoolullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) is now able to see all that which is existing and that which is non-existing; he is seeing all the apparent things and the hidden things as well; he is able to see everything.
Regarding this same vision of Rasoolullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) A’la Hazrat Imam Ahmad Raza Khan (Radiallahu Ta’ala Anh) states:
Jis Taraf Utgayi Dam me Dam Aagaya, Us Nigahe Inaayat Pe Laakho Salaam
Hundreds of thousands of Salaams upon that gaze of favour that wherever it reaches it enlivens the lifeless.
May we be blessed with the Nigahe Karam of Rasoolullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) to enliven our lifeless hearts with the Remembrance of Allah and His Beloved Rasool (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam), Ameen.
